Kirigami is the art of paper cutting, which originated in Japan. The term "kirigami" is a combination of two Japanese words: "kiri" meaning "cut," and "gami" meaning "paper." It is like origami, the art of paper folding, but in kirigami, the paper is both folded and cut.
The world of playing card collecting is both fun and at time daunting! I've met some of the best and nicest people in the playing card community, and what is true in every case is we each have different tastes, expectations, and preferences. As a producer of playing cards, I also see those various preferences and sentiments from our customers. Some customers like decks with foil, others like playing cards that are simple in design, some people only want nice tuck boxes. The list goes on and on.
The allure of fantasy stories as a child really grabbed my attention. I had quite the attachment to stories from the brother Grimm in particular partly because they are just really interesting, but also because they are mostly all based on legends from parts of Germany where my family is from. Like all of our playing card projects to date, I have always wanted to create playing cards that are connected to my own personal history and spark awe in wonder with our customers at the same time.
Based out of Tokyo, Japan, but technically from England, John spent his youth both in England and Canada. According to John, having a"Canadian accent adds to the confusion of being an Englishman"living in Japan. If that weren't enough, John is also half Turkish and was born in Istanbul but left as a baby. Basically, he's a citizen of the world and even lived in Australia for a year! It's somewhat amazing I was able to track him down.
Sometimes turning off the phones and playing a game of cards just hits differently.

The magicians at Sleight Club in Charlotte, NC put on one heck of a show to benefit Defend the Fatherless, an organization in York County, SC founded with the goal of lessening the burdens of foster and adoptive families in our community.
John Birks Gillespie, better known as Dizzy Gillespie, was born in my hometown, Cheraw, SC in 1917. He was a talented jazz trumpeter credited with popularizing a new form of jazz called bebop. His style featured a rhythmic cadence popular in jazz music, also known as a riff. I've always wanted to design a deck inspired by this pioneer in musicianship and showmanship.
