The Pied Piper Playing Cards: Designing the Tuck Boxes

When we began designing The Pied Piper Playing Cards, we knew the tuck boxes needed to feel like they belonged in the story just as much as the cards themselves. Rather than simply creating attractive packaging, our goal was to produce something that reflected the history, architecture, and atmosphere of Hamelin, Germany.

The inspiration came directly from our visit to Hamelin while researching the project. Walking through the medieval streets, studying the town's historic buildings, and visiting St. Nicolai Church helped shape many of the visual decisions that eventually found their way into the deck.

Four Editions, Four Unique Designs

Rather than creating a single tuck box with different colors, each edition received its own distinct design.

The Hameln Standard Edition serves as the foundation of the series, featuring elegant gold foil on deep blue stock with artwork inspired by the architecture of Hamelin.

The Hameln Cold Foil Edition takes a different approach, combining vibrant printing with metallic cold foil to create a striking presentation that changes as light moves across the surface.

For collectors, the Gilded Edition pairs the cold foil tuck with matching gilded cards, creating a premium version of the deck while preserving the original artwork.

Finally, the Heirloom Edition stands apart from the rest. Its design was inspired by the famous stained glass window inside St. Nicolai Church depicting the Pied Piper. Rather than reusing the artwork from the standard tuck, we wanted this edition to feel like a historical artifact connected directly to one of the town's most recognizable landmarks.

To bring these designs to life, we partnered with Boschiero & Newton, one of the world's premier luxury playing card packaging manufacturers.

Their craftsmanship allowed us to incorporate multiple premium printing techniques, including:

• Rich metallic foils

• Precise embossing and debossing

• Premium specialty papers

• Tight registration across complex foil patterns

Every detail was carefully considered, from the paper selection to the placement of each foil element. The result is a tuck box that feels substantial in hand before a single card is removed.

More Than Packaging

For us, the tuck box is the first chapter of the story.

Long before anyone sees the artwork on the cards, they're introduced to the world of the Pied Piper through the box itself. Every architectural detail, decorative flourish, and printing technique was chosen to reinforce the feeling of holding something inspired by a centuries-old legend.

It's easy to think of a tuck box as packaging. We prefer to think of it as part of the collectible.
