The Pied Piper Playing Cards: Why We Traveled to Hamelin, Germany
One question we've been asked several times is, "Did you really travel to Hamelin for this project?"
We did.
When we decided to create a playing card deck based on the legend of the Pied Piper, we wanted the artwork to be inspired by the place where the story originated—not just by illustrations we found online.
So, in 2023, we traveled to Hamelin, Germany to experience the town for ourselves.
Walking the Streets of the Legend
Hamelin is a remarkably well-preserved medieval town in northern Germany. As you walk through the old town, it's easy to see why the Pied Piper legend has remained such an important part of its identity for centuries.
Many of the buildings still feature traditional timber-frame architecture, decorative stonework, and intricate details that simply can't be appreciated from photographs alone.
Everywhere we looked, there was another source of inspiration.

Visiting St. Nicolai Church
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting St. Nicolai Church.
The church is home to a beautiful stained-glass window depicting the Pied Piper, which became one of the primary inspirations for our Heirloom Edition tuck box.
Rather than recreating the window exactly, we wanted to capture its character and craftsmanship while adapting it into a design that worked as luxury playing card packaging.
It's one of the reasons the Heirloom Edition looks so different from the Standard and Cold Foil editions.

Looking Beyond the Legend
Our goal wasn't simply to collect references related to the Pied Piper.
We photographed architecture, decorative carvings, doors, windows, stonework, and patterns throughout the city. These details helped establish a visual language for the entire project.
Many of these influences are subtle. You may not immediately recognize where they came from, but together they help give the deck a sense of place.
Research Makes Better Design
Could we have created the deck without ever leaving home?
Of course.
But visiting Hamelin allowed us to understand the atmosphere of the town in a way that books and online photos never could. Seeing the streets, the churches, and the historic buildings firsthand gave us confidence that we were creating something inspired by the real Hamelin rather than a generic medieval setting.
For us, that's one of the most rewarding parts of designing themed playing cards. Research isn't separate from the creative process—it helps shape it.
Next in the Series
Next, we'll take a closer look at the production side of the project and the premium printing techniques that transformed the artwork into the finished decks collectors now have in their hands.
